Am I Still a Writer in the Age of AI?
Lately, I’ve been thinking about this question a lot. AI can write articles, draft captions, and even mimic tone—so where does that leave me?
However, writing has never been just about stringing words together. It’s about connection, nuance, and telling stories that resonate on a deeply human level.
AI has become a small but surprisingly helpful part of my process. For example, I recently finished an essay I’m submitting to the New York Times Modern Love column (fingers crossed!). I used AI for the final 5%—a gut check on tone, helping me assess whether the piece resonates in the way I hoped. It’s fascinating to see how AI can reflect back patterns from thousands of essays, offering insights I wouldn’t have noticed myself.
But even with that help, the heart of the story—the emotions, the vulnerability, the hours of rewriting—comes from me. That’s something AI can’t replicate.
I don’t see AI as competition; I see it as a partner. It takes care of some of the heavy lifting, so I can focus on the parts that matter most: empathy, storytelling, and crafting work that feels truly human.
So yes, I’m still a writer—and maybe an even better one now.
I’d love to hear how you’re navigating AI in your creative process.
